Essential Oils vs. CBD Oil

By on April 21, 2017

Before I dive into this article I want to throw in a quick disclaimer. I have used essential oils a few times, and at the time of writing this article, I’ve never tried CBD Oil. I’ve always thought that CBD was designed for stoners, while essential oils were a gimmick that multi-level-marketers engaged in. I threw a few small test on my personal Facebook page to see which of my friends enjoyed essential oils, as well as CBD Oil. I figured there’d be a lot of interest from my mom-friends on Facebook for essential oils, and a few of my stoner friends for CBD Oil – I was quickly proven wrong and was encouraged to throw up this article.

General global interest for essential oils was virtually flat from 2004 until 2013, according to Google Trends. It wasn’t until about March of 2013 that overall interest gained momentum. Today there seem to be hundreds, of not thousands of essential providers. Companies like Idaho-based Plant Therapy pride themselves on having some of the most strict quality standards in the industry.

It wasn’t until September of 2013 when CBD Oil started gaining momentum. According to Wikipedia, Colorado Amendment 64 was successful which amended the Constitution of the State of Colorado, outlining a statewide drug policy for cannabis. The measure passed on November 6, 2012, and along with a similar measure in Washington state, marked “an electoral first not only for America but for the world.

CBD Oil is technically an essential oil. The key difference between it and products carried by companies like Plant Therapy is that CBD is a cannabis compound that in some cases claim to have significant medical benefits while not making people feel “stoned” and counteracts the psychoactivity of THC. Essentially, CBD Oils are CBD-rich and contain very little, if any THC.

What are the differences between CBD oil and CBD Hemp oil?

Hemp oil is hemp extract taken from the seeds of the hemp plant. While hemp oil can be extracted from any plant of the cannabis genus, industrial hemp is the only plant used for hemp oil. One of the reasons it’s specifically produced this way is because a number of psychoactive substances are minimal.

CBD oil is short for ‘cannabidiol oil.’ Cannabidiol is a natural element of industrial cannabis or hemp. With CBD oil you’ll see the significant content of cannabidiol and is made from the flowers, leaves, and stalks of hemp and not from its seeds like hemp oil. CBD oil was made popular by the medical marijuana industry because of its use in treatment for various conditions that excluded the typical ‘high’ effects of marijuana use.

What is an essential oil?

According to Wikipedia, the definition of an essential oil is a, “concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils, aetherolea, or simply as the oil of the plant from which they were extracted, such as oil of clove. An oil is “essential” in the sense that it contains the “essence of” the plant’s fragrance—the characteristic fragrance of the plant from which it is derived. The term essential used here does not mean indispensable as with the terms essential amino acid or essential fatty acid which are so called since they are nutritionally required by a given living organism.”

Will CBD oils surpass Essential oils in popularity?

As more consumers (like me) become educated about what CBD / Hemp Oil is I’m confident that CBD oils will because just as widely used as essential oils, if not more. Every day I meet more people who use CBD oil that doesn’t come out and say they do in fear they’ll be labeled as a stoner. In reality, stoners and non-stoners alike are feeling the benefits of CBD Oil and it’s quickly growing among seniors and many others who feel that traditional medicine simply doesn’t work.
